The upcoming 'Star Wars' movie has record-breaking pre-sales, generating more than $6.5 million for IMAX domestic screenings. 
Not so long after "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ticket sales began, some largest ticket sellers in the U.S. reported that the movie had record-breaking pre-sales. The sci-fi movie broke every IMAX records with more than $6.5 million for U.S. screenings.
"The Force Awakens" defeated the previous record holder, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire", which generated around $1 million on the first day of pre-sales. The Disney and Lucasfilm project will open on approximately 390 IMAX screens in North America.
Another ticket seller reporting the ticket sales data was Fandago. Its online traffic increased by seven times from its typical peak levels. "The Force Awakens" also became the outlet's biggest first day of pre-sales of any title.
"For 'Star Wars', we have already sold eight times as many tickets as we did on the first day of sales for the previous record holder," the company's rep said. "This is an extraordinary time for the industry, which experienced unprecedented ticketing demand last night. Movie theaters are continually adding new show times on Fandango to meet the phenomenal demand. The enthusiasm for this year's most anticipated movie is out of this world and we expect it to continue all the way to its debut on December 18."
Meanwhile, Movietickets.com reported that traffic was three times higher than the highest peak in its 15 year history. The site also said that ticket sales for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" were already four times greater than for "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" over the same period of time.
"The Force Awakens" is directed by J.J. Abrams. Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher reprise their roles as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Pricess Leia respectively. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac are also in the cast.
